Inside CytoNiche Biotech’s Beijing Headquarters, the future of automated bioprocessing was recently put into practice. The company wrapped up its High DecaGiga Cell Manufacturing Masterclass, an intensive, multi-day training initiative designed to arm global industry professionals with the technical and operational expertise required to scale up advanced cell therapies consistently, efficiently, and safely.
As regenerative medicine continues transitioning from research-driven innovation toward industrial-scale clinical application, the ability to manufacture advanced therapies has become one of the defining challenges facing the global Cell & Gene Therapy (CGT) industry. Unlike traditional biologics, regenerative medicine products involve living cells that are highly sensitive to process conditions and environmental variations. As a result, manufacturing is no longer viewed solely as a supporting function, but increasingly as a critical determinant of product quality, reproducibility, regulatory compliance, and ultimate clinical success.

Transitioning from 2D to 10-Billion-Scale 3D Bioprocessing
The programme kicked off with a comprehensive introduction to CytoNiche’s core technology platform and a deep dive into the 10-billion-scale Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) manufacturing process. Enabled by the company’s proprietary 3D FloTrix™ technology and single-use manufacturing systems, the masterclass highlighted the growing role of 3D cell culture and automated, microcarrier-based expansion in overcoming the scalability bottlenecks inherent to traditional 2D planar culture methods.
Throughout the initiative, participants engaged in a rigorous combination of theoretical coursework, live process demonstrations, and hands-on operational exercises. The training leveraged CytoNiche's full-stack, integrated manufacturing platforms, including:
- Upstream Expansion: vivaSPIN-SU automated cell culture systems and megaSPIN large-scale bioreactor systems.
- Downstream Processing: vivaEXO exosome harvesting solutions and the vivaPREP ULTRA cell processing system.
- Aseptic Final Filling: vivaFILL, vivaVIAL, and vivaPACK PRO formulation and filling technologies.

From Seeding to 50L Scale-Up
Beyond basic system familiarisation, the core focus of the training centred on process integration and manufacturing standardisation—two critical frontiers as the industry trends toward larger-scale and multi-site manufacturing models.
Participants directly executed and observed end-to-end operational workflows, mapping out process transfer milestones. This included cell seeding, automated medium feeding, in-line sampling, microcarrier dissolution, cell harvesting, washing, and resuspension. A key highlight was the live scale-up operation transferring active cultures from the closed vivaSPIN-SU systems into megaSPIN 50L bioreactor platforms.
The Paradigm Shift Toward End-to-End Ecosystems
One notable outcome of the masterclass was the expanded interest participants developed towards integrated manufacturing solutions beyond their initial areas of focus. While several attendees initially joined the programme to evaluate specific technologies such as the 3D FloTrix™ vivaEXO Exosome Harvesting System, exposure to the complete manufacturing workflow and CytoNiche's integrated technology platform enabled them to better understand the value of end-to-end process solutions. As a result, discussions evolved from individual equipment applications to broader considerations surrounding bioreactor adoption, process scale-up strategies, and the implementation of complete cell manufacturing production lines. This shift reflects the growing industry recognition that successful commercialisation requires not only individual technologies, but also fully integrated manufacturing ecosystems capable of supporting scalable and standardised production.
Through ongoing workforce development and technical exchange initiatives like the High DecaGiga Masterclass, CytoNiche continues to drive the automated capabilities and standardised frameworks necessary to anchor the next generation of regenerative medicine worldwide.
