CytoNiche was founded in 2018 by Professor Du Yanan and his two former students, Dr. Liu Wei and Dr. Yan Xiaojun, pioneers in microtissue engineering. Their decade-long research at Tsinghua University focused on a revolutionary concept: designing biomimetic 3D porous microcarriers—essentially creating "homes for cells" in vitro. By integrating micro-/nanotechnology, material science, and bioengineering, they engineered injectable, elastic micro-scale biomaterials that encapsulate cells like "smart spacesuits," enabling non-invasive, targeted delivery and enhancing cell survival for advanced therapies.
This breakthrough not only improved cell therapy efficacy but also transformed drug development by creating 3D in vitro disease models. Yet, as we ventured deeper into cell and gene therapy (CGT), a critical gap emerged: the lack of scalable, standardized manufacturing solutions to bring these life-saving therapies to patients affordably.
From Scientific Insight to Industrial Innovation
Driven by this challenge, we evolved from innovators in cell delivery to architects of industrial-scale CGT manufacturing. Our 3D FloTrix technology reimagines cell culture by designing 3D dissolvable porous microcarriers—3D TableTrix and 3D RecomTrix (xeno-free)—that act as "apartments" for cells. Anchoring to these biomimetic scaffolds, stem cells thrive in bioreactors, achieving unprecedented expansion efficiency while maintaining therapeutic potency.
This technology marked a paradigm shift: transitioning from lab-scale experiments to automated, closed-system biomanufacturing. By minimizing manual handling, contamination risks, and facility costs, we unlocked the potential for industrialized, sustainable CGT production.
