He graduated with his Bachelor's degree from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University, and later a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Bioengineering, National University of Singapore. He conducted postdoctoral research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School.
Du started innovative exploration in the distinctive interdisciplinary field of "micro-tissue engineering", so as to realize breakthrough and technological transformation.
His research topics includes the integration of micro-nano processing technology, biomaterials, gene editing, and biomechanics, so as to construct a variety of precisely controllable physiological and pathological 3D micro-scale tissues with bionic structures and functions, thereby providing novel platform technologies for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, drug screening, and pathological research.
The 3D micro-tissue technology developed by the team can be used as an expansion and preparation platform as well as a pharmaceutical delivery system of new-generation stem cell drugs to innovate regenerative medicine. With the construction of an in vitro bionic pathological micro-tissue model, a new pathological mechanism was first reported that sinusoidal capillaries promote liver fibrosis through collagen fibers-mediated "paratonic signal", thus providing precise medication regimens for the treatment of liver diseases.
His research has provided new platform technologies, theoretical models, and solutions for regenerative medicine, drug development, and pathological research.
He has published more than 80 high-impact SCI papers (in Nature Materials, Nature Communications, PNAS, Science Advances, and other journals) and 8 book chapters.
He has been authorized and granted 14 patents, of which two micro-tissue engineering technological patents have been commercialized.
